In the UK a baby video monitor is now thought to be an essential purchase for expectant parents. We are always thinking about our babies’ safety and as we find out more about Sudden Infant Death syndrome (SIDS) it has become more or less essential to be able to keep an eye on the baby as he/she sleeps with out the need for constantly disturbing them.

The way a video baby monitor works is by a camera that is set up in the baby’s room sending a signal to the receiver of which 99% are now portable. They used to just send a signal to the family’s TV but technology moved on and now small portable units are much more convenient as Mother’s can move around the house doing their daily tasks whilst constantly monitoring their baby.
The better quality models available in the UK these days have a range of channels that allow you to avoid conflicts with other wireless implements we have all become so used to such as cordless phones and wireless routers for our internet. More expensive models will have even as much as hundreds of available channels and some of them can automatically detect interference and select a better channel making sure you get a clear signal to your portable receiver.
We don’t have the hassle of trailing wires these days as all baby video monitors are now wireless based but one thing to consider is think about getting one with a night light of infrared option so that you can see your child at night.. Most receivers have a 2.1/2 or 3 inch screen and many will have a handy clip so you can attach them to your belt or pocket easily..
It’s not just the fear of SIDS that makes baby video monitors so handy. As your child becomes a toddler it’s so easy to keep an eye on them as you move around the house doing housework and they are in their playpen etc..
Try and buy the best one you can afford with the most features. As we mentioned earlier an option of many channels to choose from is very handy if you have other wireless products in your house. Also make sure the one you buy has a good enough range as it needs to be able to reach all round your house and even into your garden.
An intercom option is also a good thing as if your child is only slightly disturbed you may be able to soothe him/her back to sleep by just talking to it without having to go into the room and thoroughly disturb them.. It will be money well spent!
